UPDATE: Suspect in Indiana police-action shooting died from self-inflicted wound

RANDOLPH COUNTY, INDIANA — UPDATE @ 8 a.m. (May 8): 

The Union City man who died in a police-action shooting in Randolph County, Indiana died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Indiana State Police.

An autopsy performed Tuesday found Michael R. Evans, 38, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, state police said in a media release Wednesday morning. There was no indication Evans sustained any other gunshot wounds, including shots fired by law enforcement, investigators said.

Indiana State Police identified the suspect in a Union City, Indiana police shooting as 38-year-old Michael R. Evans.

An autopsy is scheduled for the Union City, Indiana man later today, according to police.

Dispatchers received a call around 7 a.m. Monday morning about a suspicious man hiding in bushes at a Pleasant Drive home.

When officers responded, Evans began shooting at police from the bushes, according to police.

Officers returned fire and other crews were called to the scene.

Shortly after the Randolph County SWAT team arrived, officers found Evans dead in the bushes, according to police.

The case remains under investigation and will be turned over to the Randolph County Prosecutor’s Office once completed.
