Police ID man hit with Taser who injured officer in struggle

UPDATE @ 4:45 p.m.

The wanted man who struggled with an officer early today, which led to a countywide officer assistance call, was identified as 27-year-old Anthony Stollings.

Police were initially called around 2:30 a.m. to an apartment in the 5600 block of Hoover Avenue after a woman reported her child’s father was banging on the door and came inside her home.

The first officer to respond saw Stollings standing with his hands in his pockets. After he refused to show his hands, the officer drew his gun, but Stollings ran away. The officer pursued Stollings over to the area near the Summit Square Apartments, when they began to struggle. Stollings repeatedly knocked the officer’s radio from his hands, as well as two sets of handcuffs. The officer also fired his Taser once and used it directly on Stollings to stun him twice during the struggle, according to the Dayton police report.

At one point, the officer grabbed Stollings by his T-shirt to keep him from running away, when the shirt ripped off. Stollings also punched the officer in the face and tried to wrap his arm around the officer’s neck and shoulders, the report stated.

A second officer responded, and was able to pull Stollings off the officer, and the second officer also fired a Taser at Stollings after he tried to punch the officer and run away, according to the report.

Both officers had to punch Stollings and one used knee strikes while ordering Stollings to stop resisting so they could handcuff him. Dispatch signaled a “99 call” for officer assistance after neither officer was responding to radio calls during the struggle. Shortly after the signal, the officers reported one person was in custody.

After his arrest, police reported finding 1.8 grams of suspected crack cocaine in his front pocket. He and the officer both went to Grandview Medical Center to be checked for injuries. Stollings was then booked into the Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of two counts of assault on a police officer; felony drug possession; and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and obstructing official business. He also was booked on a felony warrant on two counts of aggravated burglary and two counts of domestic violence, which stemmed from a case filed March 31 in Dayton Municipal Court.

FIRST REPORT

Dayton police said an officer was injured during a fight with a wanted man, prompting an officer assistance call.

Officers responded to an apartment complex in the 5600 block of Hoover Avenue before 2:30 a.m. Sunday on reports of a woman and her ex-boyfriend fighting.

Dayton police Sgt. Randy Beane said the man started to run away from the first officer who arrived on scene, before the officer caught up to him a short time later. Beane said the suspect began striking the officer several times prompting a countywide “signal 99” officer assistance call.

Police said as the officer continued to fight the man, a Taser was used on the man several times but it did not appear to affect him. A few moments later he would be taken into custody after a second officer arrived on scene.

One officer suffered minor injuries in the fight and was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated.

Beane said the man was known by police and was facing multiple felony warrants stemming from breaking into the same woman’s apartment two weeks ago.

Charges are still pending, but the man will face several more charges including assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and drug possession.
