Prosecutors want to try Logan County teen as adult in mother’s stabbing death

BELLEFONTAINE — UPDATE @ 8 p.m.:

Prosecutors said they want to try a teen as an adult who is accused of stabbing his mother to death early Friday at their De Graff home.

Brycen Caudill, 16, appeared in court Monday afternoon for the first time after he spent the weekend behind bars.

News Center 7’s Jenna Lawson was the only reporter in the courtroom, where the big question was whether Caudill would remain locked up.

“That’s the only decision I’m going to make today, whether you stay here or I send you someplace else or I send you home,” Logan County Juvenile Court Judge Dan W. Bratka said.

Caudill was quiet in court as he stood before the judge and his family in handcuffs, charged with murder, felonious assault and domestic violence in the death of his mother, Crystal Caudill.

Prosecutors said in court they plan to have the case against Caudill bound over to adult court.

“Young man, I do find that at this point in time, you are a risk to yourself and others,” said Bratka, who ruled that Caudill would remain behind bars until further notice.

Crews raced to Miami and Cretcher streets in De Graff just before 7 a.m. Friday after Crystal Caudill was beaten with a baseball bat and stabbed multiple times before she somehow ran to a neighbor’s house for help, Logan County Sheriff Randall Dodds said.

She was taken to Mary Rutan Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The neighbor who called 911 said Caudill’s assailant was her son.

“It was her son,” the caller told the dispatcher. “We need help quick. ... She says she can’t breathe.”

Once on the scene, deputies were able to talk to Crystal Caudill while EMS crews were arriving, Dodds said.

She reportedly told them that she had been stabbed by her son.

Brycen Caudill was taken into custody around noon Friday in Champaign County.

“He made a 911 call into Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and told them where he was at,” Dodds said.

Caudill was a student at Riverside High School with a 3.5 GPA and no prior criminal record. During his interview with detectives, no reason was given for what led to the attack, the sheriff said.

The next court date for Caudill has not yet been set.

His family was in the courtroom but declined to comment following the hearing.
