Fatality identified in Springfield entrapment crash at John Street

UPDATE @ 1:45 p.m. (June 4): A 35-year-old woman is the fatality in Sunday's two-vehicle collision at John Street and Portage Path, Springfield police said in an accident report.

Jessica Cydrus was driving a Toyota Camry east on John about 4:15 p.m. when an SUV police said was speeding drove through a stop sign at Porage Path, and smashed into the driver's side of the vehicle.

A passenger in the Camry, Jamie Salters, was taken to Miami Valley Hospital.

The driver of the SUV, 18-year-old Micah Byrd of Springfield, was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center, according to the police division report.

INITIAL REPORT (June 3)

One person died and two others were hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash in Springfield Sunday afternoon.

Springfield police said a Camry Toyota was going east on John Street around 4:15 p.m. when a SUV that was speeding drove through a stop sign at Portage Path, smashing into the driver’s side of the vehicle.

The Camry came to a rest against a telephone pole.

The female driver of the Camry died. The female passenger was taken by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital. The male driver of the Saturn Vue was also injured.

Witnesses said three passengers from the Saturn Vue fled the scene, police said.

Marcus Settles, a Springfield resident and family member of the fatal victim, said “she was just a mother.”

“She really enjoyed life, she was a great person, and she was a great friend of mine,” he said. “She was a friend to be around, a lot of fun. We had a lot of good times, and we enjoyed life together. I remember her as just an all around good person who enjoyed life.”

This news organization is not naming the victim until officials notify all next of kin and release her identity.

Speed is believed to be a factor in this crash. Police have not said if the driver of the SUV will face charges.
