Dayton Police Sgt. Creigee S. Coleman told News Center 7 on the scene that the warrant was for a man who is accused of releasing his dog, which ended up biting someone in the neck earlier this month.
As reported on News Center 7 at 6:00, the attack sent Brian Cochran to the hospital.
Cochran’s family told Mike Campbell that he was approached by a group of people and their dogs. They threatened him, wanting his bike. It all led to a life-threatening situation that was caught on video.
The assault was described as “savage” in an affidavit filed in Dayton Municipal Court earlier this week.
The video of the attack obtained by News Center 7 shows a group of people knocking Cochran, 60, down. Men then swarm him, punching and kicking him on the ground. That’s when the dogs attack his back and neck.
Cochran’s daughter, Diamond Cochran, said her brother texted her family to tell them their dad was being taken to the hospital. They rushed there to support him.
“They tried to kill my dad over a bicycle,” Diamond said.
Cochran’s family said they’re shaken by his severe wounds and the callous nature of the attack.
“That’s kind of pathetic that you can’t even go back to where you’re living because you’re scared that somebody’s going to retaliate against you over a bike,” Diamond said.
The family said Cochran was rushed back into the hospital due to an infection and underwent more surgery. His family hopes he will fully recover physically.
The suspect refused to come out of the house when asked during Friday’s standoff.
“So the U.S. Marshals were able to go in and apprehend the individual without the use of gunplay, without the use of force, and without the use of anybody getting hurt,” Coleman said.
The suspect was taken to the Montgomery County Jail. Online jail records show Derrick Purter was arrested at the address on Friday morning.
Court records filed this week in Dayton Municipal Court show Purter was charged with felonious assault in connection with the dog attack.
Coleman said three dogs were taken from the property and taken to the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center.
The investigation into the attack is ongoing.
