Dayton Police Sergeant Poteet told News Center 7 that an adult woman’s body was pulled out of the river, but couldn’t provide additional details.
News Center 7 obtained the 911 call that brought authorities to the scene.
“I’m out by the river by Helena Street Bridge, over by McCook Field, and I see a body in the water,” the caller said.
The caller gave dispatchers more details on the location.
“It’s right across from Highland Park,” the caller said. “So it’s like the waterfall to my right.”
News Center 7’s Malik Patterson watched more than a dozen officers along the shoreline.
Early on, they called it a sensitive scene.
Around 7 p.m., the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office left with the woman’s body. Her identity was not immediately available.
Richard McNeil watched officers pull the body out of the water.
“You never want to hear about the loss of life. It’s always tragic,” McNeil said.
McNeil said he comes to this part of the river all the time.
“Daily commuter here. So, yeah, this is my first time in years seeing this sort of scene,” McNeil said.
He couldn’t help but think of his own family.
“I have two daughters, so I can only imagine what those folks might be going through. But, yeah, just, just very sad,” McNeil said. “Just prayers for the family.”
News Center 7 has reached out to authorities for additional information. We will continue to follow this story.
