As reported on News Center 7 at 5, Dayton police and medics were called to the 900 block of West Riverview Avenue around 12:20 p.m.

Tawana James said she got one of the worst phone calls in her life.

One of her grandsons was telling her that another grandson was shot and bleeding badly.

“They were cleaning up the house for their mom for her birthday ... because she’s been in the hospital,” James said.

Someone discovered a gun, James believes an 11-year-old shot his brother accidentally.

“So nobody would think this would come, I mean (the children’s mother) does have her gun license, but nobody would think this would happen, it’s too much,” she said.

The 12-year-old is expected to survive his injuries, despite being shot in the face, a Dayton police spokesperson said.

The shooting happened across the street from McIntosh Park and bus stop where Piper Davis was.

“I saw three kids standing on the porch like a casual day, and then I saw a bunch, well, I heard a bunch of gunshots,” Davis said.

Police confirmed a suspect was in custody but did not provide further details about them.
