As reported on News Center 7 Daybreak, several track athletes at Wayne High School spoke to district leaders on Monday night about how the current plan is already hard for some families.

The plan that district leaders were considering would have put the price up to $750 per sport, with no family cap for the 2026-2027 school year.

The current plan for students to play in the district is $150 per sport with a $500 family cap.

District leaders heard from track athletes on the proposed plan.

“There are a lot of great athletes here at Wayne, but you don’t really know what’s going on in their lives or what their background story. Some athletes have both parents, some athletes have one, and some athletes don’t have even both,” said Alex Moncrief.

“I feel like running saved my life,” said Dashawn Fears.

Fears said that his grades were shaky and he was acting up in school and didn’t know what he wanted to do until he found running.

The district will still have to deal with budget challenges, but the plan will not include students having to pay more to play sports.
