MIAMI VALLEY — From today through Sunday, people who still need to go back to school shopping will not have to pay taxes on some things.
Ohio’s Sales Tax weekend will start on Friday, Aug.7 starting at 12 a.m. and will run through Sunday, Aug. 9, at 11: 58 p.m.

As reported on News Center 7 Daybreak, Ohio’s Sales tax event used to last two weeks and used to cover basically all items, $500 or less, with some exclusions.

The Ohio Department of Taxation Policy Director Tim Lynch said that the Ohio General Assembly passed legislation to bring back the expanded sales-tax holiday next year for August 2027.
“That sun has set, and we’re back to the back-to-school sales tax holidays which is good for not just children going back to school, families buying school supplies, but all Ohioans can take advantage of it as long as they are buying those items that are under those dollar thresholds,” said Lynch.
The event is not just for physical stores, but parents can also order things online and not pay tax.
Things that are eligible include clothing items $75 or less, and school supplies up to $20.
School instructional materials such as maps and workbooks are covered under the tax-free weekend.
Glasses and contacts are also eligible.
Lynch said the average family spends about $900 per child each year, starting from kindergarten through 12th grade.
“Teachers have kids in school as well, and you know, they’re also buying items for their classroom, and those are, you know, going to qualify if they are under that $20 threshold for, you know, school supplies,” said Lynch.
With the tax-free weekend, families can expect to save about 70 to 80 dollars a child.
