15-year-old suffers burns after science experiment at local school

JAMESTOWN — A 15-year-old was burned during a science experiment at a local school on Wednesday.

Greene County dispatchers confirmed around 1:50 p.m. that the helicopter was called to Greeneview High School for a report of a student who had burns on their body.

A 15-year-old was doing a science experiment involving ethanol, and it got out of control, according to Silvercreek Township Fire Chief Steve Payton.

The teen suffered injuries to 45 percent of her body, mainly her upper torso.

Her airway was compromised, according to Payton. He described her condition as “critical.”

Payton said another person suffered minor burns.

The teen was flown to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus to be treated by their burn unit.

Payton said he has no reason to believe this fire was intentional.
