The rescue took place while the county was under a Level 2 Snow Emergency and there were below-freezing temperatures.
The Mechanicsburg Fire Department said the call for help came out at approximately 8:52 p.m. and crews arrived on scene around 9:10 p.m. due to hazardous road conditions.
The horses had fallen through the ice on a pond in the 1000 block of South Parkview Road.
The body camera video shows that the horses were submerged up to their necks.
The fire horse was pulled from the pond at approximately 9:13 p.m. and the second was rescued at approximately 9:21 p.m., according to the fire department.
An emergency veterinarian arrived on scene about 20 minutes after both horses were rescued.
The owners of the horses told the fire department that they are both doing well with no concerns.
“Through teamwork, determination, and outstanding coordination, both horses were successfully recovered thanks to the hard work and dedication of all agencies involved,” the police department said.
Mechanicsburg police, fire crews, Champaign County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and community members collaborated to save the horses.
