Great Miami River rises several feet after Sunday’s rain

DAYTON — After the region saw between one and two inches of rain Sunday through Monday morning, the Great Miami River has risen over four feet within 24 hours, according to the Miami Conservancy District.

“MCD’s flood protection system of dams and levees is working as designed, preventing floodwaters from affecting downtowns along the Great Miami River from Piqua to Hamilton. All five of MCD’s dams temporarily stored floodwaters on Sunday,” a conservancy district spokesperson said in a media release.

River levels have peaked in Troy and Piqua, however the levels will continue to rise through the rest of Monday downstream in Dayton and down to Hamilton.

Four of those dams, Lockington, Englewood, Taylorsville, and Huffman, were still holding water Monday. The Germantown dam was no longer holding water by Monday afternoon, the spokesperson said.
