Many of our lakes, ponds, and rivers froze because of the recent cold temperatures.

Several fire departments conduct this ice training across the region.

Dayton Fire Captain Matt Sherill told News Center 7 that they almost canceled Wednesday’s training because it was too cold. They also did not want to put their guys in danger.

“It is a very dangerous thing for anybody to go out on the ice,” he said.

He said if someone falls through, they call out their dive team or use a drone team to find the victim.

“Worst case scenario, we’re teaching our guys that we have about 15 minutes so very, very low-temperature water is going to render you unconscious very quickly,” said Sherill.

Other fire departments have done ice training.

The Kettering Fire Department posted photos on social media of firefighters undergoing ice rescue training last week.
