Argument over backpack leaves man shot; juvenile suspect wanted

XENIA — UPDATE @ 4:31 p.m.:

There are new developments in a shooting in Xenia on Wednesday morning. Investigators said an argument over a backpack led to the gunfire.

Now, police are looking for the shooter, and they said he’s a teenage boy.

The shooting happened on East Church Street in Xenia. News Center 7’s John Bedell spent the day in Xenia and got an update on their investigation.

According to police, new video shows some of the emergency responses on East Church Street, and the search for the suspect.

News Center 7 talked with people who live in the neighborhood and watched it all happen.

Santana Redman, who lives nearby, said, “It was kind of scary, honestly. First thing to wake up to.”

She continued, “I came out. I heard a bunch of sirens at exactly five o’clock. I came out to cops flying down the street.”

Xenia Police said a juvenile suspect shot a man in his lower leg. Medics took the man to a local hospital with what police described as a serious gunshot injury.

Sgt. Matt Cvitkovich said, “It does appear there was some kind of altercation over a backpack.”

Police said they were unsure of the exact relationship when News Center 7 talked to them. But said the suspect and the victim knew each other.

UPDATE @ 9:54 a.m.:

A man was injured in a shooting in a Xenia neighborhood on Wednesday morning.

In an update, Xenia Police said officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower leg in the 600 block of E. Church Street.

The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police are actively searching for the suspect, who’s been identified as a juvenile male.

Officers and medics responded to a shooting in a Xenia neighborhood early Wednesday.

The shooting happened at around 4:58 a.m. at the 600 block of E. Church Street, according to Xenia dispatchers.
