Adjunct professor Adam Dyer works for Cedarville University’s cybersecurity department. He works in IT and has been in the field for 20 years.
“They have a long road ahead of them to determine if it can even find out what individual records were accessed,” Dyer said.
Kettering Health said in a statement to News Center 7 that they will contact the impacted patients directly.
News Center 7’s John Bedell looked into what people should do if hackers did get their personal information and continued to press Kettering Health for answers.
At the end of the business day at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday, Kettering Health sent a news release that said they “are working diligently to identify what data was impacted.”
They also said they’d contact people whose data was impacted directly and that “notifications may include fraud protection resources, such as identity theft or credit monitoring.”
“When a large organization is affected by a cyber attack, these services are standard to the offered,” Dyer said.
Dyer said it may sound like a simple fix, but changing your passwords is a good first step for those worried.
“[It’s] a great first step because an attacker will take the password from Kettering Health and then check your credentials at other sites,” Dyer said.
Dyer also advised patients to freeze their credit.
Bedell emailed Kettering Health on Wednesday to ask how they are working to find out what and whose information has been impacted.
He also asked what their plan was to contact patients whose data was breached.
Kettering Health responded with a link to their ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ page and said, “That addresses the scope of your inquiry.”
Bedell responded to Kettering Health and asked his questions again.
Kettering Health sent another statement that didn’t answer the questions and said, “You have the most up-to-date information from us.”
News Center 7 will continue to press Kettering Health for answers and update this story.
