Super pink moon tonight is biggest of 2020

The full moon in April, sometimes called the pink moon or egg moon, is considered special because it’s also a supermoon, said Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini.

The moon won’t actually look pink, but April’s full moon is called the pink moon because flowers start to bloom this month.

A supermoon occurs when the moon becomes full during the same time it is closest to earth during orbit.

This months’ supermoon will be the biggest and brightest of the year because it’s the closest a supermoon will be to earth this year, Zontini said. It’s hard for the naked eye to really see a difference between a supermoon and regular full moon, but when matched up with a micromoon (a full moon when it is farthest from earth), a supermoon can be up to 30 percent brighter.

Before storms arrive tonight, the clouds may be broken enough to watch the super pink moon rise around 7:48 p.m. in the eastern sky. It will look large because it rises right around sunset.
