Matos leaving Flyers

Dominican native played two seasons at U.D.

Dayton, Ohio — Jhery Matos is leaving the Dayton basketball program after two seasons with the Flyers. The redshirt-junior has entered the NCAA transfer portal, and since he will graduate from U.D. this summer he will be eligible to play right away in his one season with a new team.

Announcing the move on twitter Matos wrote, “Thank you Flyer nation! For the past two years, you guys made me feel like home. I appreciate you for the love and support throughout my years here at UD. Y’all have a warm place in my heart.”

Matos came to Dayton from Monroe College in the Bronx, N.Y. He averaged 20 minutes a game in his first six games with the Flyers before tearing ligaments in his toe against Oklahoma in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas.

Known as a defensive specialist in his time at Dayton, Matos played in 27 games this past season, but he only average 8.6 minutes and 1.8 points per game.

After surgery to repair the injury, Matos sat out the remainder of the year and was granted a redshirt season by the NCAA.

Matos is a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and his departure opens up a third scholarship for Flyers head coach Anthony Grant this off season. That’s a number that could grow to four in Jalen Crutcher keeps his name in the NBA Draft.
