WATCH: Household items teach social distancing lesson in Dayton-made video

We’ve heard the words “social distancing” from leaders at all levels, from local health officials, to the governor, to President Trump. But understanding the concept behind those words has proved complex, with many questioning its effectiveness in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

Real Art, a marketing and technology company based in Dayton, helped to highlight its simplicity using household items in a now viral video. The 30-second sequence shows the difference in chain reaction when mouse traps are placed far apart, rather than close together.

When placed together, and a single ping-pong ball is dropped, the result is chaos. But when distanced, there is no chain reaction; the ‘patient 0’ ball has no impact on the others.

“If anyone has mouse problems right now... my bad!” design director Andy Nick told the outlet. It reportedly took Nick days to find supplies at local dollar stores.

The video was made at the request of the Ohio Department of Health, and according to Dayton.com, was created using real footage and no CGI.

Ohio continues to make global headlines for its wins in the world of social distancing, and this clever take on the concept is only the latest gem to come from the department of health.
