Warm December means concrete still pouring

A milder winter is expected this year, and weekend temperatures are forecasted to reach 60 degrees.

This warmer weather can have mixed consequences for weather-dependent industries, such as concrete and snow removal businesses.

NewsCenter 7’s John Bedell caught up with Josh Anders, co-owner of R&A concrete located in Xenia.

“This time of year it’s usually getting cold, rainy; this year it seems to be staying warmer, not a whole lot of rain, the ground’s not frozen so we’re able to continue further into the winter months,” Anders said.

His company has about six employees, and produces concrete products during warm months before transitioning into a snow removal company for winter.

On Wednesday, Anders and his crew were in Huber Heights pouring a basement and dry slab for a new home.

“As long as it’s not below freezing we’ll keep at it,” Anders said. “It helps us a lot; we can get a lot more done.”

But that comes with a cost, he said, and that’s less time to prepare for switching over equipment into 10 snow plow trucks.

“We’ve been as busy as ever,” Anders said, the busiest December he can recall. “The worst fear is very cold weather with no snow. That’s where we slow done or can even stop work.”

Bedell will have more on this story starting at 5 p.m. on WHIO.
