SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A 5-year-old boy did his best to protect his mother during an armed invasion of the family’s home in South Bend, Indiana.
Footage released Friday by the South Bend Police Department showed a Sept. 30 incident in which the boy defended his family.
According to officials, four men disguised in hoodie sweatshirts knocked on the front door of the home and forced themselves inside when a child opened the door.
Three of the men had handguns as they approached the child’s mother, Tamika Reed, in the living room of the house.
While Reed was attempting to talk to the intruders, her son, David, pushed and hit one of the gunmen. He can also be seen looking around the living room for an object to throw. He settles on a toy car and throws it at another intruder before hitting him and jumping on him.
“This video is extremely disturbing. You can see a little boy hitting one of the armed suspects as he tries to defend his home," police said in a statement. "It is our job now to defend him.”
Reed called her son a hero.
Police are investigating the incident.
