The dog, named Baby Girl, was surrendered at the airport after its owner was told the dog’s crate would not fit under the airline seat, WSOC reported.

The owner, who did not want to be identified, told WSOC that she is visually impaired, on a fixed income and unable to afford cargo-transport fees. The woman said she had no choice but to surrender the dog because she was moving from North Carolina to Iowa. The woman said she left the animal in the care of Furbabies Animal Rescue and left knowing she was in good hands.

“I wouldn’t have gone on the plane,” she told WSOC. “I would have been homeless. I would have stayed on the streets of North Carolina with my dog.”

Furbabies Animal Rescue picked the dog up from the airport and is now working to give the 14-year-old beagle a fresh start and a forever family. Baby Girl is now in a foster home.

“We’ve taken her to the vet and she’s really friendly with everybody,” Robin King, who is fostering the dog, told WSOC.

Furbabies Animal Rescue told WSOC that Baby Girl needs blood and dental work done before she can go to a new home. The group estimates the work will cost $1,000.
