Jared D’Amato said he parked the U-Haul at the Best Western Premier motel in Kansas City, Kansas, on Friday, KMBC-TV reported.

According to police, the 20-foot moving truck was stolen at about 3 a.m. CDT, WDAF-TV reported.

“It’s just like when you’re watching the news and you see a tornado or hurricane wipe away someone’s house and they lose all of their possessions and their belongings,” D’Amato told the television station. “It just feels like that.”

D’Amato said his mother died in 2021, and the ashes were of sentimental value. He wants them back, along with his grandmother’s ashes.

“You can take anything, my tools anything of value but please for the love of God can you please leave my mother’s ashes, my grandmother’s ashes, my photos, it’s all I have left of her,” D’Amato told WDAF. “I just never thought this would happen to me. It’s the worst thing imaginable.”

D’Amato’s sister drove from Colorado on Saturday night and picked him up, according to the television station.

The U-Haul has a blue mammoth decal on its side, along with Arizona license plate AG64189, KMBC reported. Anyone with information about the truck’s theft can contact the Kansas City, Kansas police or the Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers Tips Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
