Girl, 8, dies after relative accidentally strikes her with brush hog in West Virginia, deputies say

WOOD COUNTY, W.Va. — A child has died after a family member accidentally struck her with a brush hog in West Virginia, authorities said.

According to WTAP-TV, the incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday on Progress Ridge Road in Wood County. A relative of the victim was using a rotary mower and did not see the 8-year-old girl before accidentally striking her, Wood County sheriff’s deputies said.

Emergency crews declared the girl dead at the scene, WTAP reported.

No further information was immediately available.

Medical examiners plan to perform an autopsy on the girl, but authorities do not expect to charge anyone in connection with the case, according to WTAP.
