Gender reveal: Baby panda born last month is boy

WASHINGTON — Panda fans pandas now know if it was a boy or girl recently born at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.

Zoo officials announced the 6-week-old cub is a boy.

The baby, which still doesn’t have a name, was born Aug. 21, The Associated Press reported.

Panda keepers conducted a generic test using a cheek swab.

The baby’s also starting to get its black and white coloring normally seen on pandas.

Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated right after the zoo was shut down March 14 because of the coronavirus pandemic, the AP reported. At the age of 22, she’s the oldest panda to give birth in the U.S.

The oldest known panda to give birth was 23 and lived in China.

Mei Xiang has three other cubs, Tai Shan, Bao Bao and Bei Bei, which were all sent to China when they were 4 years old due to an agreement with the Chinese government, the AP reported.
