DAYTON — The director of Saint Vincent de Paul says they preparing to see an increase in the number of people in need of shelter over the next month and this fall.
This is because at the end of July, the federal moratorium on evictions was lifted and the federal pandemic unemployment compensation expired.
Currently with social distancing efforts in place, St. Vincent’s is only able to house half of their capacities at their two shelters. They are also using a local hotel to house about 80 people.
Help may be coming from the state level. State Representatives David Leland and Juanita Brent introducing the Eviction Crisis Response Act.
The shelter is currently undergoing renovations to try and house as many people as possible while maintaining social distancing.
It would take 270 million dollars from Ohio’s rainy day fund and create a program for one-time rental assistance payments to people struggling to play their rent.
Rep. Leland says more than half a million Ohioans are at risk of eviction. This is more than 1 in 4 renters.
