Off-duty Cleveland police officer killed in carjacking

CLEVELAND — An off-duty Cleveland police officer was killed during a carjacking Friday night.

The incident happened on Rocky River Drive in Cleveland’s Kamm’s Corner neighborhood, according to WOIO, a CBS affiliate in Cleveland.

The off-duty officer was identified as Shane Bartek, 25.

Authorities said Bartek was shot twice during the carjacking around 6 p.m. He was transported to Fairview Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The shooter drove away from the scene in Bartek’s vehicle.

WOIO reported that a male suspect was later taken into police custody after leading several police departments on a pursuit. Authorities said additional suspects have since been arrested in connection to the investigation.

“This is a very sad day. My heart is aching for the family and for our officers,” incoming Cleveland Police Chief Wayne Drummond said during a press conference Friday.

The incident is under investigation by Cleveland police.
