Grease ignites, leads to kitchen fire in Dayton

UPDATE @ 8:35 p.m.: A child who left the stove on is being identified as the reason for a fire at an apartment in the 1700 block of Rangeley Avenue that destroyed the kitchen.

Grease left in the stove or on top of it heated up and ignited, Dayton Fire Capt. Robert Cockayne said.

When fire crews arrived, everyone was outside the apartment, the captain said in knocking down earlier reports called in to the regional dispatch center that there were people running in and out of the working structure fire to rescue pets.

Cockayne said he had no reports of any injuries and there were no pets in the apartment when his crews arrived.

Damage from the smoke and fire was contained to the kitchen, he said, and he estimated that damage to the structure and the contents at $5,000 to $6,000.
