UPDATE @ 11:50 p.m. April 17:

A Beavercreek woman pleaded not guilty today to embezzling more than $30,000 from a Fairborn Cub Scout pack.

Melissa Heerdt faced a judge for the first time today following her arrest Monday on an indictment for felony theft returned by a Greene County grand jury.

Heerdt’s attorney entered a not guilty plea for his client during her brief appearance this afternoon in Greene County Common Pleas Court. Her $5,000 bond was continued. She is due back in court May 14.

Heerdt is accused of thefts over a two-year period, from 2011 to 2013, while she served as treasurer for Cub Scout Pack 162.

A Boy Scouts of America spokesman said Heerdt was removed as treasurer as soon as the charges were filed. He also said accounting procedures to prevent misappropriation of funds apparently were not followed, such as a requirement that checks have two signatures from leaders of different families.

If convicted as charged, she could face 18 months in prison.
