50-100 vehicle pileup shuts down Michigan highway for hours, injuries reported

PORTLAND TOWNSHIP, MI — A pileup involving 50 to 100 vehicles shut down a Michigan highway for hours Saturday.

The chaos happened around 4:40 p.m. when at least 50 vehicles were involved in a pileup on I-96 in Portland Township following whiteout conditions, according to CBS affiliate WLNS.

Injuries were reported but so far no serious injuries have been reported to state troopers, according to Michigan State Police on social media.

A warming and reunification center was set up at a nearby church for those involved in the crash; buses were used to transport them.

Some on social media reported being stuck on the highway for over nine hours.

The roadway has since been reopened.
