Mystery of skinned cow near New Carlisle solved

UPDATE @ 4:25 p.m. (Jan. 13)

A Tipp City man has come forward to resolve the case of the skinned cow found Jan. 8 in the middle of Addison-Carlisle Road.

Ethan Manuel said the cow was his, and that it died shortly after giving birth. Manuel said he loaded it onto a flatbed truck to dispose of it, but that it wasn’t until he arrived at his destination that he noticed the animal had fallen off the truck, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office announced this afternoon.

Manuel told deputies he back-tracked his route, but said he was not able to find the animal. When he saw the story on local news, he contacted the sheriff’s office.

Manuel is charged with failing to secure a load and has been ordered to appear the afternoon of Jan. 20 in Clark County Municipal Court.

UPDATE @ 6:12 p.m. (Jan. 11): Residents in Pike Twp. are disturbed at finding out a cow was found skinned and dumped in the middle of Addison-Carlisle Road, Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly said.

Deputies are investigating the fatal skinning and dumping and are trying to determine the circumstances of the incident, Kelly said, noting his investigators do not believe it was an accident.

“Certainly whoever placed that animal there in the middle of the roadway did it deliberately,” the sheriff said.

A New Carlisle man and his wife called the sheriff’s office about 6:30 p.m. Friday after they discovered the freshly skinned cow in the middle of the roadway, in the 6000 block of Addison-Carlisle Road.

“They (the culprit) had to know that some of the area residents would find it,” Kelly said. “So it’s disturbing. The entire area out there is very disturbed about this.”

Deputies said the cow had been freshly skinned and steam was coming off the carcass. The sheriff’s incident report also indicates the animal’s blood had not coagulated and its eyes were not showing signs of decomposition.

The hide, as well as a metal wire believed to have been used in the offense, were located next to the animal, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies said they believed the cow had been dropped off at the location where it was discovered, as the animal’s hooves showed no signs of tearing, scraping or dragging.

The sheriff’s office is first trying to determine who the owners of the cow are so investigators can then determine if incident is a theft or animal abuse, Kelly said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the sheriff’s office at 937-521-2050.
