Only a few were able to see Thursday’s solar eclipse in the Miami Valley which peaked right around sunrise.
TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE
On April 8, 2024, Dayton will experience a total solar eclipse that will be a very special experience. Being in the path of totality means that we will experience total darkness here as the moon casts a shadow on the Earth, blocking out our view of the sun. Totality will last a little more than two minutes.
A total solar eclipse can occur when the moon is in a new moon phase, when the sun, moon, and Earth line up almost perfectly, and when the moon is closest to Earth during its orbit aka perigee.
Remember, you can’t look directly at the sun because it could cause eye damage. Instead, you will need special eclipse glasses or welder’s glasses rated 14 or higher for safe viewing.
