UPDATE: Hours-long SWAT standoff at Springfield apartment ends with man in custody

SPRINGFIELD — A man was taken into police custody following a SWAT standoff that spanned several hours early Tuesday morning in Springfield, according to police.

The incident started as a report of a domestic disturbance at an apartment building in the 700 block of East High Street around 1:10 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said while officers were first investigating the call a man threatened to use a gun against police and the woman who was inside the apartment. Officers were able to get the woman out of the apartment and to safety before the suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment, police said.

SWAT units responded and surrounded the apartment building, deploying tear gas inside the unit to attempt to get the man out.

The suspect in the standoff, only identified as a man, surrendered and was taken into custody before 7:30 a.m. He was transported to an area hospital for evaluation, police said.

The entire apartment building was evacuated during the standoff and those residents remain temporarily displaced until the tear gas dissipates, police said.

Charges in the incident are still pending, police said.
