UPDATE: Minor cable failure dislodges manhole covers on East Fifth Street in Dayton

DAYTON — UPDATE @ 4:15 PM:

A manhole cover was dislodged after a “minor cable failure” occurred on East Fifth Street, according to a spokesperson from DP&L.

The spokesperson clarified there was no fire and that the pressure caused by the cable failure dislodged the cover.

News Center 7 is working to learn more about reports of witnesses hearing an explosion.

INITIAL REPORT:

An underground fire caused manhole covers to blow off the street on East Fifth Street in Dayton Monday afternoon, according to initial reports.

Crews reported a utility issue and underground fire on East Fifth Street near the Dayton Convention Center and Oregon District around 2 p.m.

According to our crew on the scene, smoke continues to pour out of manholes in the area and there is strong electrical smell. Police, fire, and DP&L crews are blocking parts of East Fifth Street near the incident.

No injuries have been reported.
