DAYTON — Some people woke up Wednesday morning with little or no water in Dayton.

A water main break was discovered around 5 a.m. on Gettysburg Avenue. By mid-morning most of the water was gone but city crews still had a bunch of work to do.

“I was on Gettysburg. It was just water. I ran through. It wasn’t a whole lot,” said Michael Wilson of Dayton.

The city of Dayton said the water came from a 12-inch water line that had ruptured.

David Shade, Dayton’s Water Utility Field Operations Manager said people who lived in the area south of Hoover, east of Longvale, north of West Second Street and west of North Gettysburg either experience low water pressure or lost water.

The city of Dayton issued a precautionary boil advisory for homes and businesses in the area until the repairs were made. Although the official cause of the break has not been determined, often water main breaks are caused by temperature swings, which cause the ground to shift and pipes to crack.

Old pipes can also just fail.

Since the beginning of 2022, the city of Dayton has had a total of 44 water main breaks.
