WEST CARROLLTON — Local World War II Veteran Richard Gard celebrated his 99th birthday Wednesday.

Gard has been awarded the Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal and two Purple Hearts.

To celebrate there was a birthday car parade around Gard’s house at the 900 block of Pearhill Drive in West Carrollton Wednesday afternoon, put on by the local VFW post.

The VFW post shared why it is so important for them to recognize Gard.

They said they have a couple of WWII veterans who have difficulty leaving their houses.

“Anything we can do to celebrate a birthday, special occasion, to be able to just say ‘you’re not forgotten’... we’re happy to do that,” a spokesperson for the post said.

Joined by the West Carrollton Fire Department and police department, the parade made loops around the block.
