MONTGOMERY COUNTY — Time is ticking away for a tax reduction for properties in Montgomery County under the homestead exemption program.
Applications for the property tax credit must be in by Dec. 31.
The homestead exemption program allows senior citizens and permanently and totally disabled Ohioans that meet annual state-set income requirements to reduce their property taxes, according to the Montgomery County Auditor’s Office.

“The Homestead Exemption, which takes the form of a credit on property tax bills, allows qualifying homeowners a reduction that is equal to the taxes that would otherwise be charged on up to $25,000 of the market value of their home,” the auditor’s office said.
Ernest Scals Jr. said at this point, any little bit will help.
“Sometimes people forget the little things and the little people like us,” he said.
Not everyone is eligible for the tax break under the program.
For this year’s application, you must be 65 or older or be permanently disabled, and you also have to have an adjusted gross income under $33,600. You also would need to have owned your home as of Jan. 1, 2020.
If you’ve received the credit in the past, there’s no need to reapply unless you’ve moved.
You can get a copy of the application for the homestead exemption credit on the Montgomery County Auditor’s website.
