Possum Elementary School will be closed Monday due to low classroom temperatures and ongoing work, the district announced tonight through social media, a One Call to parents and on its website.

  • All other schools on normal schedule, according to a Twitter post from Clark-Shawnee Local School District spokeswoman Megan Anthony.
  • A gas leak last week led the school to close part of Tuesday and all day on Wednesday.
  • District officials will monitor temperatures to determine whether to cancel school and will alert parents through the One Call notification system.

“We are continuing to work as quickly as possible with our repair company and Columbia Gas to complete all necessary repairs at Possum School so we can resume our normal school schedule and we anticipate finishing repairs and completing the required inspections early this week,” the district posted on its website.

A gas leak has forced an evacuation on Tuesday at the elementary school located at 2589 Springfield Xenia Road. Shortly before 11 a.m., the leak was reported in the rear of the building.

Students boarded buses, and the building was evacuated as Springfield Twp. fire crews respond to the incident.

Columbia Gas Ohio Spokeswoman Kelli Nowinksy said the leak wasn’t part of the gas company’s system. She said the school has hired a plumber and Columbia Gas is doing everything it can to help the situation.

“Our crews did what they could to locate the leak,” she said.

Nowinsky said she was unsure Tuesday evening where exactly the leak took place.

“After the repairs are finished our crews can come back together to do a safety check,” Nowinsky said.

Clark-Shawnee Superintendent Gregg Morris said his staff reacted quickly when someone smelled gas. He said the Springfield Twp. Fire Department investigated  the incident.

The school district relocated students to the high school and served them lunch.

Students were led out of the building and boarded buses to stay warm.
