GREENE COUNTY — There are items that are in higher demand than others when making donations to local food pantries.
Gail Matson, of the Xenia Fish Food Pantry, said they are grateful for any donations they receive, but a lot of the food they receive is items left in the back of people’s cupboards. There are items that are in high demand that people do not always think of donating.
“We take dairy, eggs, butter,” Matson said. “Everyone loves butter and it’s something we don’t get that often.”

Can goods with pop tops are also items in high demand.
Other items that are sought after by pantries are breakfast foods like cereal and pop tarts. Cake mixes and frosting are also good to donate.
Matson said versatile items like rice, pasta and noodles are always great to give.
“Everybody loves noodles,” Matson said. “They can make so many things with them and we seldom get noodles.”
While food pantries like the Xenia Fish Food Pantries like to receive ready-to-make meals like Hamburger Helper and Rice-A-Roni, they don’t take frozen foods and meals unless they are from a business. This is because they are not able to verify if they have been stored at the proper temperature.
