FAIRBORN — A firefighter is recovering at home after they were injured while responding to a fire in Fairborn Monday.

Crews were called to a fire in the 400 block of Cleary Drive after residents called 911 saying there was a large amount of smoke in their garage.

While firefighters were knocking down a fire in a kitchen, cabinets fell, injuring the firefighter, according to Fairborn Batallion Chief Adam Howard.

A “mayday” was called and all crews were asked to exit the structure.

The firefighter was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Fire officials said they are not identifying the firefighter to protect their privacy but they have since been released from the hospital and are at home.

A family dog did die in the fire, according to fire officials. A cat was also taken to a nearby vet.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and an estimate of damages has not been determined.
