Firefighter fell when floor collapsed in house fire

A St. Paris firefighter fell 10 feet when an Urbana home's floor collapsed Thursday.

She was taken to Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana as a precaution, but was released hours later, without serious injury.

The woman's name was not released by the Johnson-St. Paris Joint Fire District.

She was doing overhaul on the second floor of the home when the collapse happened, according to the Urbana fire department.

After falling through to the first floor she was able to walk out of the home.

The fire was reported in the 2400 block of West U.S. 36 Thursday afternoon. It caused heavy damage to the structure and destroyed at least three vehicles.

There were no other injuries, said Bob Ward, who owns the home. He said the building is "100 years old or better."

Ward said his son and grandson woke up the tenants in the house and they all escaped without injury. As many as seven young people live in the home, Ward said, and some of them attend Urbana University.

Urbana fire officials have not determined a cause of the fire, which was called in at about 5:15 p.m.
