Fire at old Kroger evacuates 2 Centerville businesses

An electrical fire outside an old Kroger building Saturday afternoon forced the evacuation of two adjacent businesses.

Fire crews were called around 1:30 p.m. to a fire outside 1035 S. Main St. in Centerville.

“When we arrived, there was a three-phase master service panel that was arcing and burning,” said Joel Holbrook, shift commander of the Washington Twp. Fire Department, which provides fire service for that portion of Centerville.

Crews quickly put out the fire, but had to wait for Dayton Power & Light crews to turn off the power. DP&L was able to isolate the issue and restore service to the two adjacent businesses, which were without power for about an hour, Holbrook said.

There was no extension into the building, and the fire was contained to the exterior, he said.

No injuries were reported, and the cause was not known.
