Dayton housing inspectors focusing on garages

City housing inspectors are busy these days, checking garages for possible violations.

Kevin Powell, acting city housing inspection manager, said his crews are searching alley throughout the city looking for paint, roof and structural problems.

They’re hoping to make the inspections more regularly, Powell told News Center 7’s Kate Bartley on Wednesday evening.

“Houses get dealt with a lot, but sometimes the garages don’t get dealt with as they should,” Powell said.

According to city records, there are more than 51,000 garages in Dayton. Inspectors have checked approximately 10 percent of them and have found 710 violations.

Cecil Dixon received a warning this week — the first complaint about his garage in the more than four decades he has lived in his house.

He told Bartley he’ll have to spend thousands to repair his garage.

Still, Dixon said he’s resigned to the fine, noting he hopes inspectors will enforce the city ordinances with everyone.
