Breach in protocol prompts brief WPAFB lockdown

UPDATE @ 4:36 p.m.:

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base temporarily shut down gates to Area B this afternoon after a contractor who works on the base apparently did not follow procedures at an entranceway, according to Wright-Patterson officials.

In a statement, Col. John M. Devillier, base commander, said an individual who has access to the installation drove through Gate 22B near Interstate 675 “without following proper procedures.”

“As a result, security forces followed procedures and immediately closed all gates exiting and entering Area B,” the statement said. The incident occurred around 3 p.m.

Base spokesman Bryan Ripple said the man “apparently just sort of held it (an ID card) up and flashed it to (a gate sentry) and drove away so the guard didn’t have a chance to put it in his hand and look at it.”

It wasn’t immediately known how long the gates were closed, but they had reopened after the incident. “The gates are open and people are coming and going,” Ripple said.

Gate 22B is the same place a 32-year-old Beavercreek man who was not authorized access to the base allegedly drove passed and got into a restricted-access facility Nov. 24 at the Air Force Research Laboratory. The man is facing charges in U.S. District Court.
