Antioch College's plan to install an array of solar panels was cleared Monday night when the village council denied an appeal of an earlier decision of the planning commission.
The council was unanimous in allowing the plan to move forward.
Antioch College wants to be the first to harness enough solar energy to power a college campus. The plan is to install panels on a nearly 5-acre lot on Corry Street that is now full of grass. Each panel would be about 7 feet tall.
At a public hearing earlier this month, Antioch President Mark Roosevelt told News Center 7's Kate Bartley that private funds would cover the installation costs and the solar array would save the college an estimated $400,000 a year.
Village residents have worried publicly that the high-voltage area would be dangerous and the 8-foot high chain link fence that would be needed to surround it would be ugly.
The college, which applied for the permit in August 2013, wants to cover the fence with artwork, Roosevelt has said.
Kate Bartley will have more on this story tonight starting at 11.
