AAA urging drivers to test car batteries ahead of summer road travel

DAYTON — AAA is encouraging drivers to maintain a healthy car battery ahead of road travel this summer.

They responded to at least 113,000 calls last summer for emergency roadside service with 22% for battery replacement, according to a AAA spokesperson.

AAA is also encouraging regular maintenance for examining tires, lights, belts, hoses, fluids, and windshield wipers. They are asking for special attention to be given to the car battery.

“Many drivers underestimate the impact of extreme temperatures on car batteries,” says Jason Cravens, Battery Service and Sales Manager for AAA Club Alliance. “While the winter cold is a well-known battery killer, summer heat can be even more damaging. If your battery is over three years old, it’s essential to have it checked sooner rather than later to ensure it can handle the upcoming heat.”

Warm summer temperatures can cause battery fluid evaporation and cable issues, AAA said. They say it’s important to have your battery tested regularly.

“While certain warning signs like slow cranking or illuminated warning lamps are indicators of a battery issue, not all failing batteries show obvious symptoms,” says Cravens. “To avoid a dead battery situation, it’s crucial to have your battery tested regularly, especially if it is approaching the typical lifespan of three to five years.”

Other car batter tips AAA suggests are time, weak battery signs, choosing the right battery, quality and warranty, and finding a quality auto repair shop.
