Head-on crash sends 4 kids, 2 adults to hospital

A head-on crash between two vans shut down Smithville Road Sunday afternoon and sent four children and both drivers to the hospital.

A full-size van was traveling south on Smithville Road around 3:52 p.m. just before reaching the Reading Road intersection when it swerved into oncoming traffic and struck a minivan with four children inside, said Dayton police Sgt. Steven Bauer.

"There were six injuries, none of them were serious," Bauer said.

The full-size van driver was trapped and had to be extricated from the vehicle. An off-duty Dayton EMT was able to aid the man until crews arrived, Bauer said.

A man driving the minivan, along with his four children, the youngest 2, were also taken to the hospital, Bauer said.

The full-size van driver likely was going to be cited in the crash that closed Smithville Road for about 45 minutes.

"We don't know why he swerved into oncoming traffic," Bauer said in response to whether the driver suffered a medical issue at the time of the crash. Also, Bauer said there were no signs of alcohol or drugs at the crash scene.
