While the holiday season is a time to give thanks and celebrate with friends and family, it's also a time for criminals to prey on the generosity of others.
Huber Heights authorities are warning residents about one or more people going door-to-door claiming to be firefighters collecting donations to buy Christmas gifts for children.
"It's a shame that people have to take advantage of people, especially around Christmas time," said resident Josh Holmes. "People have families to take care of and buy presents for, not to give money to somebody who doesn't deserve it."
Huber Heights Fire Chief Mark Ashworth said a few businesses and residences have been approached by these scammers, who ask people to "donate" $100 for older children and $50 for younger ones.
"Typically when there's a solicitation done at a professional level, they're not setting the dollar amount, they're asking for whatever the individual can give," Ashworth said. "My fear is that we have other, especially elderly people that are so giving this time of year that they're taken advantage of."
The Huber Heights Fraternal Order of Police is currently collecting donations for its Cops and Kids program, which will be celebrated Dec. 19 at Meijer.
The program raises money all year to buy gifts for children and to help families in need.
