DAYTON, Ohio — A man accused of shooting and killing another man outside a Dayton tavern last December was sentenced on Wednesday.
Tyray Lynn Ward, 27, of Dayton was sentenced to life in prison in the shooting death of Austin Newell on December 11, 2020.
According to a release from Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr., officers responded to Jay and Jeans Tavern on Leo Street after getting a 911 call, reporting shots being fired. Officers arrived and found the shooting victim, Newell, on the road outside the tavern.

Investigators said it was determined that Newell was a passenger in a vehicle that was driving through the parking lot. According to Heck, Ward fired several shots at the vehicle, striking Newell who then fell out of the vehicle.
Ward was indicted by the Montgomery County Grand Jury on Jan. 7, 2021, and he was found guilty on counts of murder and felonious assault with a deadly weapon.
Heck said Ward will not be eligible for parole until he serves at least 15 years in prison.
