Streck said that when Smiley responded, the man came out of the woods without shoes, holding a container and yelling a repeated phrase. Smiley told him to drop the container of liquid, at which point he poured it all over his body. Smiley believed that the man was drinking gasoline.
Driscoll then began to rapidly advance toward Smiley, Streck said, at which point Smiley backed up and pointed her gun at him. Driscoll picked up the container, began drinking from it again and said he was drinking “the blood of Jesus.”
He advanced toward Smiley again and said “shoot me then.”
Streck said Smiley gave 36 commands before shooting Driscoll.
Another deputy arrived, and they administered first aid until medics arrived.
Smiley was not injured, but was taken to a local hospital as a result of the incident.
She has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard.
Driscoll remains in the hospital.
