Victim in Cambridge Ave. shooting is recovering

A man shot in the leg at his home on Cambridge Avenue during a robbery attempt says he is recovering.

Jermaine Juniel was wounded at his home in the 600 block on Wednesday night. He told police he managed to fire several rounds at his two assailants, police said.

Juniel, 32, told police he was smoking weed, reading the Bible and watching an NBA game when two men in their 20s came to his door and asked if he knew "Cory."

He told police he told the men no, when one of them said, "give me the keys to your car" and pointed a gun at him, according to a Dayton police incident report. Dayton Sgt. Andrew Gillig said that tactic is often used by robbers trying to get into people's homes.

Juniel told police he tried to slam the door, and the man with the gun fired at him, hitting him in the leg. Juniel said he was able to shut the door, though the suspect fired several more shots through the door.

The suspects began kicking the door. The victim said he dead-bolted the door, got his gun and fired eight to 10 times at the front door. He then called 911.

Police and a medic unit were dispatched to the address on the report of a shooting at about 9:30 p.m.

Juniel was taken to Miami Valley Hospital. Thursday afternoon, from his hospital room, he told News Center 7 he was doing well and recovering.

Police said Juniel described the suspects as black and 16 to 19 years old. The one with the gun was short, wore his hair in a mini Afro and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. The other was tall and thin and dressed in dark clothing.
